WHAT IS UTTAD PROJECT?

Preserving Heritage, Empowering Artisans

Launched by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the USTTAD (Upgrading the Skills and Training in Traditional Arts/Crafts Development) initiative safeguards India’s traditional crafts by empowering minority artisans. The project focuses on:

  • Preserving endangered ancestral arts and crafts.

  • Training artisans to refine their skills with modern techniques.

  • Revitalizing traditional crafts for contemporary markets.

By bridging heritage and innovation, USTTAD ensures these art forms thrive for future generations. http://usttad.minorityaffairs.gov.in/

Bhopali Batua

Amidst its shimmering lakes and rich cultural heritage, Bhopal retains an old-world charm through its traditional crafts. One such treasure is the Bhopali Batua—a delicate yet vibrant emblem of the city’s artistry.

The Art of the Batua

A small, semi-spherical purse adorned with intricate beadwork and shimmering sequin stars, the Bhopali Batua is both functional and ornamental. Traditionally used to carry coins, fragrant spices, betel nuts (paan), and perfumes, it remains a beloved accessory among locals and a symbol of Bhopal’s craft legacy.
